Share your input to shape a new test area
We have established a project to explore the possibility of simplifying testing activites in Byfjorden outside Bergen and very much welcome your input.
GCE Ocean Technology has been awarded project funding by Vestland County Municipality to explore the potential for establishing a test area in Byfjorden, just outside Bergen.
Share your input
To better understand the industry's needs and requirements, we have developed a short survey.
Your feedback will help define the scope and capabilities of a potential test area in Byfjorden.
Share your input, by 18 September.
– We are aware of several test sites along the Norwegian coast, but increasing activity and demand for local testing have created a growing interest in establishing a dedicated test area closer to Bergen, says Jon Hellevang, R&D Manager at GCE Ocean Technology and project lead.
Byfjorden is used by a wide range of stakeholders and ensuring a safe coexistence between different activities and users will be a key part of the project.
– We are hosting an open meeting towards the end of the year to get input from different stakeholders. Please feel free to get in touch as early as possible so we can ensure that all perspectives are taken into consideration at an early stage, Hellevang encourages.
Rapid development
The project aims to support the rapid development of offshore operations, with an increased push towards remote, unmanned and autonomous operations.
The development is driven by increased efficiency, reduced costs, lower emissions and reduced human risk exposure. Testing and demonstration of new solutions are essential for innovation.

Test area Byfjorden
Byfjorden, outside Bergen, is already used for different testing purposes.
We see the potential to increase the amount of testing performed in the area and, by doing so, increase innovation and reduce emissions.
