Bergen-based Aragon has a solution to one of the major challenges within CCS. They both purify and liquefy CO₂ in the same process.

Here at TU alone, the term CCS (Carbon capture and storage) has been mentioned hundreds of times in recent years.

The first article dates back to 2005 and describes the construction of a CO₂-free gas power plant in the United Kingdom.

In this week’s episode of the podcast Teknisk sett, you can hear CEO Kristian Utkilen and Chief Orchestration Officer (!) Christopher Pedersen of Bergen-based Aragon talk about the company’s unique solution that purifies and liquefies CO₂ in the same process.

Played on many fields

Aragon is approaching 20 years in operation and was originally intended to become a major player in LNG production (liquefied natural gas) on ships.

Today, the company is partly owned from Singapore and has explored several niches along the way – including hydrogen and other projects within oil and gas.

– The transition to new energy takes time. We have therefore remained committed to the oil and gas industry until we have built sufficient capacity in new areas, says Utkilen.

Two processes in one

It was in 2018 that the company first committed to CCS.

– We found a niche within CCS. The CO₂ must be both liquefied and free of corrosive elements before it can be transported to storage. Our world-leading technology does this in the same process, explains Pedersen, who comments on his own unusual job title by saying that such projects simply require “orchestration.”

In this week’s podcast, you can hear Jakobsen and Pedersen talk about Aragon’s unique solution – and not least the journey to get there.
