From Sand and Stone to a Modern Industrial Hub
Over the past 70 years, Wergeland has grown from a small local producer of sand and stone blocks into a diversified industrial group engaged in port operations, shipyard services, environmental solutions and energy projects.
If you drive through Alver municipality, past Mongstad and take the ferry across Fensfjorden, you’ll arrive at Wergeland Base – just as our Renewable Energy Resource Group did earlier this month.
We were welcomed by CEO Margunn Bjørnestad and VP Business Development Bjarte Aldal, in their newly refurbished business centre, Vidsyn.
Margunn highlighted the company’s clear vision: to be an active, responsible contributor to the local community – firmly rooted in coastal traditions and committed to sustainable development.

Guided Tour of Sløvåg Base
A guided tour led by Tom Erik Sandnes, CFO at Wergeland Base, gave us a real sense of how the site has developed into a modern industrial and energy hub.
The base spans a large quarry area north of the main road and extensive quay and industrial zones equipped for heavy industry and offshore wind operations. An increasing number of companies are now establishing themselves at Sløvåg, attracted by its infrastructure, location and growth potential.

Shipyard, Technology and Offshore Wind
In addition to the impressive base at Sløvåg, the group owns and operates Solund Verft – a mechanical shipyard known for its advanced docking system and strong maritime competence.
The Sløvåg base has already hosted several major projects, including Hywind Tampen, Hywind Scotland and Culzean for TotalEnergies.
With the right expertise, capacity and plans in place, Wergeland now aims to establish a dedicated offshore wind factory at Sløvåg – a national hub for assembly, production and logistics for future offshore wind developments.

Expansion Plans
After an excellent lunch, Bjarte Aldal, VP Development, concluded the visit with a presentation of the base’s capacity and expansion plans.
He shared valuable insights into completed projects, technical solutions and future ambitions – clearly showing how Wergeland combines local roots with global industrial vision.
They are more than ready to take on new offshore wind projects.

On behalf of the Renewable Energy Resource Group and all participants, GCE Ocean Technology extends sincere thanks to Wergeland for an informative and inspiring day.
There’s no doubt that Sløvåg stands out as one of Vestland’s most complete and forward-looking industrial facilities – perfectly positioned for upcoming offshore wind and other large-scale sustainable industries.
