The 2.6 MW floating wind turbine, Zeyfyros, is situated 10 km west of Karmøy, not far from Utsira North, and with almost the same wind conditions. This open testing infrastructure is available for all companies to use.

Tore Kallevåg, Vice President of Sales and Business Development at Sustainable Energy Norwegian Catapult Centre, shared insights during our Ocean Lunch in Bergen this week, stating;

"We are currently testing SCADA systems, conducting multiple tests on sensors, mooring systems, and examining responses to anchoring, wave impact, and intelligent bird monitoring among others on Zeyfyros."

A heli-deck installed

A helicopter deck has recently been installed at the base of the floater. This addition allows for drone testing or similar activities at the fully operational wind turbine, Zeyfyros (formerly known as Hywind Demo).

The catapult invests in testing infrastructure in Norway in collaboration with the industry and opens these facilities for use by all Norwegian companies and for different branches of the industries.

A variety of user cases

In terms of user cases, they span across many domains:

4Subsea have installed advanced retrofit sensors on the floating turbine to prove cost reduction potential with a Digital Twin. While Imenco Corrosion Technology has tested an anode protection system for anchoring to explore the possibility of reducing the dimensions of chains and steel.

Karsten Moholt has utilized the facility to test their maintenance control system, assessing its functionality.

Moreover, oil and gas industry players have used the floating turbine to examine the adaptability of their oil and gas systems to offshore wind turbines and Island Offshore has tested its gangway system on Zeyfyros, demonstrating the versatility of user cases.

Fast-tracking ideas to market

We have entered into a strategic collaboration agreement, with Sustainable Energy, giving members of GCE Ocean Technology access to extended services.

Moreover, we are also in partnership with Ocean Innovation Catapult Centre who also offer test infrascture to help ideas go faster to marked.
