Want a fresh pair of eyes on a problem you haven't had time to solve? Students are good at that.

A bachelor or master's project is a low-risk way to get a real question properly investigated and to meet the people you might want to hire in a year or two.

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) is now asking for project assignments from companies, for students in general mechanical engineering, energy technology, marine engineering, ocean technology, and sustainable production and circular economy.

Master's students in sustainable energy technology are included too.

What you get

A bachelor project counts for 20 credits – around 540 hours per student between early January and the end of May 2027.

In practice, most students put in more. Master's projects run at 30 or 50 credits. All projects are presented at EXPO in June, an open one-day event where every engineering project at the faculty is shown.

The students have a supervisor at HVL, but your company is expected to contribute professional guidance as well. Direct costs – materials, components, travel, printing – are covered by the company. HVL normally holds the rights to the finished work, possibly shared with you and the students, and confidentiality can be agreed where needed.

A bachelor project is done by two or three students, a master's project by one. The template asks whether you can provide a qualified external examiner – that's optional, not a requirement.

Fill in the specification template and email it to one of the contacts at HVL, preferably by Friday 30 October 2026. Later submissions are still possible. Assignments are allocated to students in late November or early December 2026.

  • Multi-phase systems and petroleum flow assurance
  • Test of models of marine vessels and installations in Marinlab (50 m tow and wave tank)
  • Response and anchor analysis with SESAM
  • Operation and maintenance of thermal machines and their components in our Motorlab
  • Energy efficiency of processes and buildings
  • Waste heat recovery and energy from waste
  • Assessment and use of renewable energy
  • Hydrogen technology
  • LEAN management and logistics
  • Industrial and international marketing
  • Industrial processes
  • Evaluation and implementation of industry standards
  • Operation and maintenance of offshore and subsea installations
  • Subsea operations

If you're unsure whether your idea fits, send it anyway. HVL would rather discuss a rough idea than never hear about it.
