The Energy2050 expert group has now published their recommendations on how Norway can build the knowledge, technology, and trust needed to develop a future seabed minerals industry.

The report identifies substantial potential, but underlines that progress must be stepwise, science-based, and built on robust environmental, safety, and societal requirements.

Norway has many advantages

The expert group highlights that Norway has significant advantages through mineral resources on its own continental shelf, extensive offshore and processing experience, and strong research and management expertise.

–We see huge potential for technology and knowledge transfer into the emerging seabed minerals industry. The industry is in an early stage, and Norway has all the possibilities to take a leading role, says Jon Hellevang, R&D Manager in GCE Ocean Technology, who has been part of the expert group.

Recommendations for the way forward

The report has identified several research areas and provided recommendations for further actions. It is specific on the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. As an example, the possible environmental impact will be very closely linked to the geology, and the technical solutions for mining and processing.

– I hope the report will help guide future research and work efforts in the right direction. A key takeaway from my work with the report is the need for interdisciplinary work, good communication and close collaboration across research, industry, management and the public at large, says Hellevang.
